Self-improvement class for tourism players

Mersing Tourism Association (MTA) plans to organise a skills programme for tourism industry players by the end of the month.

Its secretary Ahmad Firdaus Shaik Omar said the programme would focus on soft skills that prioritised ways to improve customer service and guidelines on the standard operating procedures in the new norm.

“We have decided to conduct this class as a way to fill our free time during the lockdown.

“Some of the tourism players have started to venture into other businesses, so having this class is one of the best methods to help our members,” he said.

Ahmad Firdaus added that the class would be held online with a maximum of 50 participants.

“The class is being held for free.

“Right now we are discussing the topics and syllabus that we can cover and share during the class.

“There are members of MTA who have the skills and certification to run such online classes and we are taking advantage of this to share the benefits with other tourism players,” he added.

Ahmad Firdaus said similar classes had been held with Eastern Corridor Economic Region (ECER) in the past.

“This time we are running things on our own to improve ourselves so that when the movement control order is lifted, we can continue providing our service as usual,” he added.

Jom Ronda Pulau tour operator Murni Saderi, 35, said she started selling food online to generate income during the lockdown.

“I used to sell stuffed tofu online during Ramadan, but ever since the MCO was imposed, it has become my main income.

“So far, support has been positive and some of my customers are the people whom I took on island hopping tours in the past,” she said.
